Court Marriage and Marriage Registration in Nepal
How to register a marriage in Nepal, the documents required, and what registration protects.
A registered marriage is not a formality; it is the document that proves the relationship for everything that follows, from property and inheritance to visas and citizenship of children. In Nepal, marriage is registered at the local level under the Civil Code.
Who can marry, and the conditions
The Code sets the minimum age and the conditions for a valid marriage, including consent and the absence of a subsisting marriage. A marriage that fails these conditions is not merely unregistered; it may be void or voidable, which is a far more serious problem.
Registration and documents
Registration is done at the local registrar’s office with proof of identity, age, and, where relevant, the parties’ status. For couples who marry abroad or where one party is a foreign national, additional documents establish the foreign element. Getting the paperwork right at registration avoids difficulty when the certificate is later needed.
Why registration matters
An unregistered marriage can be hard to prove when it matters most: claiming inheritance, securing a spouse visa, or establishing a child’s status. Registration turns a private fact into a public one that institutions will accept without argument.
